NASSCOM International SME Conclave: German Mittelstand meeting Indian IT SME

India

On 4 March 2022 at the NASSCOM International SME Conclave, the Indo-German Digital Dialogue facilitated a session on “Opportunities for Indian SMEs in Germany and understanding digitalisation needs of the German Mittelstand” together with the German Association for Medium Sized Businesses (BVMW).

The objective of the session was to discuss opportunities and challenges for Indian IT SMEs in collaborating with German Mittelstand companies to support them with their digitalisation needs. Speakers from companies such as Thyssenkrupp and Schmersal emphasised that German companies are open to work with Indian partners.

However, they have to adapt to the rather conservative approach of German SMEs. Reinhold von Ungern-Sternberg (BVMW) highlighted that compliance with the European Union’s General Data Protection Rules (GDPR) is another prerequisite to be successful on this market.

The speakers further mentioned that along with competence, developing trust with German companies is also an important criterion. Indian companies should position themselves as partners in the digitalisation journey rather than only focusing on transactional business.

The session was attended by more than 400 participants from the Indian IT sector.
