Kenya and Germany Deepen Cooperation in IT Outsourcing and BPO Sectors
Kenya
Kenya continues to position itself as a competitive and secure destination for BPO/ITO services in Africa. Backed by the Data Protection Act 2019 which mirrors the EU’s GDPR, Kenya offers international investors a reliable data governance environment. During the meeting, Director John Kiria, Ministry of Information, Communications and Digital Economy (MICDE), reaffirmed the Kenyan government’s commitment to enhancing the sector through strategic policy recognition and incentives under the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) framework.
The establishment of this bilateral working group is a strategic step to leverage Kenya’s untapped talent pool to meet the growing needs of German businesses. The virtual event brought together stakeholders from both nations including government officials, BPO industry leaders, and associations who jointly defined objectives, future activities, and participation in the group.
Public-Private Synergy for Growth
One of the key highlights of the exchange was the emphasis on the active engagement between public and private sectors. The ongoing engagement is expected to close existing gaps in the BPO ecosystem and unlock new opportunities for partnerships. The public sector’s proactive role beyond policymaking is essential in promoting Kenya as a secure, competitive, and attractive destination for outsourcing. The working group also seeks to foster regular and inclusive engagement with bi-monthly meetings planned to track progress and align strategies.
Deeper Understanding of the Markets
The success of this partnership relies on the mutual understanding of each other’s market needs and facilitating necessary matchmaking. The working group underscored the need for better understanding of the requirements to access the markets and build on the relationships. The Kenyan BPO need to prepare the talents based on the Germany’s skill needs.
Activities such as exhibitions, networking events, and targeted BPO presentations are already being explored to deepen connections and promote Kenyan capabilities to international clients. These efforts are set to reinforce Kenya’s stature as a key player in the global ITO/BPO ecosystem.
Looking Ahead
The Kenya-German Digital Dialogue helps in building connections between stakeholders within the larger BPO & ITO ecosystem. With Kenyan companies showcasing the country’s BPO sector at the upcoming GITEX Europe and further events in the pipeline, the exchange is indeed a first step towards further milestones. Stakeholders are encouraged to participate. You can reach out to digital-dialogues@giz.de to become part of the working group.
