OpenIMIS and AI: Solutions for social security by Dataprev

Brazil

From November 4 to 7, 2024, Rio de Janeiro hosted the Technical Seminar of the International Social Security Association (ISSA) under the theme "Artificial Intelligence for Social Security – Building Bridges to the Future." The event brought together ISSA members from the Americas and Portuguese-speaking nations to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Dataprev, Brazil’s state-owned leader in social security technology.

A notable highlight of the seminar was a workshop led by experts from Dataprev and GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), in collaboration with the Secretariat for the Brazilian-German Digital Dialogue. This session focused on the OpenIMIS initiative, an innovative open-source platform that integrates data from beneficiaries, providers, and payers, streamlining processes and enhancing system interoperability. The OpenIMIS initiative exemplified the potential of international collaboration and technological innovation to revolutionise social security frameworks, embodying the seminar's vision of building bridges for a more inclusive and efficient future.

Held at the Observatório of the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro, the workshop highlighted how OpenIMIS enables efficient, cost-effective management of social programs without the need for expensive custom developments.

Through the hands-on guidance of Dataprev’s Innovation Lab team, participants explored its potential applications beyond social security, including public policies related to healthcare, education, and disaster management. The session showcased the platform’s collaborative, open-source nature, empowering organisations to tailor it to their specific needs and drive innovation in public service delivery.

OpenIMIS: A catalyst for global collaboration and innovation

The session was expertly coordinated by Felipe Leão, the manager of Dataprev’s Innovation Lab, who underscored the pivotal role of open-source software as a foundation for modern collaborative development. He eloquently detailed how open-source platforms foster enhanced accessibility and adaptability, empowering organizations like Dataprev—responsible for managing Brazil’s largest and most intricate databases—to achieve greater efficiency and innovation.

Adding further depth to the discourse, Ernesto Lembcke, technical advisor for the International Digital Dialogues project, emphasized the session’s dual significance. Not only does it amplify the visibility of OpenIMIS across the Americas, but it also fortifies collaborative connections between Brazil and its global partners. By facilitating the exchange of knowledge and expertise, the event emerges as a vital conduit for advancing international cooperation in digital innovation.

From a global vantage point, Saurav Bhattarai, team leader of the OpenIMIS Initiative, enriched the discussion by presenting compelling success stories from diverse global contexts. His insights highlighted the transformative impact of OpenIMIS, showcasing how its implementation has revolutionised healthcare access, optimised resource management, and enhanced system efficiencies in various countries. These examples vividly demonstrated the platform's versatility and ability to address distinctive challenges in different regions, further solidifying its status as a catalyst for meaningful change.

The ISSA seminar highlighted how innovation and collaboration, exemplified by OpenIMIS and AI solutions, can transform social security systems. Dataprev and its partners demonstrated the power of open-source technology to foster global partnerships and drive meaningful progress in public service delivery.
